Knights in Training

Castles, knights, princesses, and anything related to those topics are very popular around here right now.  We borrowed a pile of books from the library and one that we all enjoy reading is In the Castle by Anna Milbourne and Benji Davies.  This is a great book for young children about what life was like in a castle.

C and R made the simplest shields this week, and there has been a lot of knight play going on.  I cut shield shapes out of cardboard.  C decorated his shield with crayon and R painted hers.

I loved that C grabbed our copy of Ivanhoe off the bookshelf for inspiration when decorating his shield.  The cover has gold lions in profile standing on their hind legs; C drew one lion on his shield.  I also love that R is using her shield to protect her strawberry-peach smoothie.

I attached a toilet paper roll to the back of each shield (horizontally) with heavy duty packaging tape; that serves as the handle.
