The Kool Aid Tie Dye tee shirts we made yesterday are still drying. So far, we are very happy with the experience.
We followed the directions at Kids Kreate to make the tie dye.

Forts and Sewing and Tie Dye - OH MY!
Wow, I had no idea how long the days would seem without Tom here. I miss his company. I'm glad he will be home soon. He did get to see some of the men's bike race today, and I think it is awesome that he saw an Olympic event, even if they drove by and the whole thing was over in an instant!
Today, I woke up to find Collin sitting up watching the Olympics at 5:15 this morning! He was so excited to be watching the bike race because he knew Dad was watching it in London!
The rest of our day included making a fort,
a visit from Papa and Grandma,
sewing with Grandma,
playing hidden picture addition at aplusmath.com (more summer homework),
playing Twister,
dancing in the rain,
using Kool Aid to tie dye tee shirts (I will post the results tomorrow),
learning how to braid,
a glow in the dark bath tub,
some reading,
and another camp out in the living room.
Phew!
Oh, and if you are wondering if Tyler is having any fun, he spent all day yesterday with his girlfriend, and went to a friend's house today.

Patriotic Play Dough Made with Kool Aid
I love to make Kool Aid play dough for the kids. It smells so good, the color is vibrant, it's easy to make, and the recipe makes a lot. It's funny - we use Kool Aid drink mix to make play dough and paint, but I don't think my kids know that it is a drink mix!
With Memorial Day coming up, I thought it would be fun to make some patriotic play dough. The dough is red and I added white, silver, and blue glitter. Here is how I made it:
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
3 small packages of cherry Kool Aid unsweetened drink mix (3.6 grams each package)
3 TBSP oil
2 cups boiling water
glitter
Directions:
1. Mix together flour, salt, Kool Aid powder, and oil.
2. Add boiling water and mix until the dough is cool enough to touch. (Can you smell the cherry Kool Aid through the screen? Seriously, this play dough smells SO good!)
3. Add glitter (I began with blue and white glitter, but the white glitter did not show up so I added silver. I like to add a lot of glitter.) and knead until smooth.
*Store in an airtight container or Ziploc bag in the fridge. This recipe should last through Memorial Day and the 4th of July!
I put this out with star cookie cutters and rolling pins, but we have a lot of play dough tools that the kids are always free to use.
*People always ask me how to avoid getting dye all over their hands from homemade play dough. I have found that if you mix the color (or in this case, the Kool Aid drink mix) with all of your ingredients before adding boiling water or cooking (depending on the recipe), the color stays with the dough and does not transfer.

Kool-Aid Play Dough
Kool-Aid Play Dough is so much fun! The color is vibrant and the play dough smells SO good! This week, we made cherry Kool-Aid play dough. Here is the recipe:
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
3 small packages of Kool Aid unsweetened drink mix (3.6 grams each package), we used cherry
3 TBSP oil
2 cups boiling water
- Mix together flour, salt, Kool Aid, and oil.
- Add boiling water and mix until the dough is cool enough to touch
- Knead until smooth
- Store in an airtight container or Ziploc bag in the fridge
C and R used alphabet cookie cutters to spell words and animal cookie cutters to make a farm.
They played with this dough for most of the afternoon!

The Sweetest Smelling Garden
We have painted with Kool Aid many times, and this week we decided to make a sweet smelling garden. I drew some crazy looking flowers on watercolor paper (I used watercolor paper because it is more forgiving when it is wet!). Then, to make the Kool Aid paint, I mixed 2 TBSP of water with one packet of unsweetened Kool Aid powder.
We used different flavors of Kool Aid powder in little plastic containers so that we could have a colorful (and fragrant) garden.
R painted all of the flowers to her liking and when it was dry, it smelled so sweet. We cut out the dry flowers and glued them onto green construction paper that we cut to look like grass. I love the way Kool Aid paint looks when it is dry; the colors stay so bright! It smells wonderful too. If you have never made Kool Aid paint, add this to your MUST DO list.

Kool Aid
When I was a kid, I drank Kool Aid. Did you? My children don't drink it, but they create beautiful Kool Aid paintings!
We used three different kinds of Kool Aid. I put one packet into each bowl and mixed the powder with 2 tablespoons of water. Mix well and then paint!
When the paintings dry, they smell delicious. If the smell fades, simply scratch and sniff the artwork.
