Salt Watercolor Art

R created this masterpiece!

This work of art was created by C!

This is one of our favorite art projects of the summer.  The only downfall is that it's not really possible to keep the art unless you want salt falling all over the floor.  It's definitely worth doing though because art is really all about the process, and C and R both enjoyed this process!

Materials:
- dark construction paper
- school glue
- table salt
- watercolor paints (we like Faber Castell)
- paint brush
- water (for the paints)

Directions:

C and R began by squeezing glue onto the black construction paper to create designs.

Then, they sprinkled the table salt over the glue until it was all covered.  We let it sit for just a few minutes, and then I shook off the excess salt.

Next, C and R dipped their brushes in the water and the watercolor paints, and just dabbed the paint onto the salt.  You don't want to use a typical paint stroke, just gentle dabbing.  The paint spreads, and it is very cool!  Oh, I should mention that we did not wait for the glue to dry before doing this step; I'm not sure if it would change the outcome, but we were very pleased with our results.

For some reason the pictures are making me hungry. I think they look like candy!

I wonder if you could spray it with something to keep the salt on, so you could save it? They are so pretty.

I love the colors and the way these turned out.

This is something I would enjoy doing with Jack and Jesse. Thank you for sharing the how-to on it so we can try.
