We have had this toy for a while. I have no idea what it is called or where it came from. We have used it to sort colors and arrange the wooden blocks by size, but I can't help but think that I am missing some great learning opportunity with this toy. So, if you owned this toy, what would you do with it?

Simple math? Adding, subtracting? Fractions? Not sure if (ie. 2 reds = a blue?) Good way to introduce 1/2 and whole...just trying to help we have many open ended toys that sit around her too :) Good luck..I'll keep thinking.
I'll ponder it and let you know if I come up with anything. It could just be used for generic building as well it seems.
I have no idea what this toy is called. Looks nice though.
What about copying games and mirror games? Sit opposite each other and try and mirror each other us by calling out the colours.
Sequencing
Umm...blog about it and ask my friends what to do!? haha! Maybe donate it to an art class? Umm..I just don't know other than the obvious!
Could it be used to teach fractions?
Maker patterns? Build?
Since it's 10 rows of 10 it seems like you could do some kind of montessori-esque math lesson about 100s...but I'm too artsy and too much of a math dummy to figure out what that would be right now - LOL!! My daughters love it and said they would put it to good use if you ever get sick of it : )
I've never seen anything like that!
fractions?
I can't wait to see what you find out!
It looks neat. Maybe some counting? Also pretending that those colorful blocks are tropical fish, hiding them around and see which of your kids can catch more fish.
you could teach patterns by arranging the colors?
Thank you for the suggestions! Great ideas!
Hey Christy, I think you toy is made by Grimms, and it's called (or they are called) Stepped Counting blocks. You can find out more about them, including suggestions on how to use them, here : http://www.babynaturopathics.com/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=52&idproduct=2872
I'm envious - I've been wanting a set for a while :) I hope you manage to find lots of ways to have lots of fun with yours!
All the best,
Chelsea
