Cookbooks for Kids - Part Three
We have decided to work our way through some cookbooks for kids. There are really no rules, except that we will choose cookbooks written with children in mind and make at least one recipe from each cookbook. This is just for fun, and to give us an excuse to work together in the kitchen.
Our third cookbook in this series is An Astronaut Cookbook by Sarah L. Schuette. This cookbook is from the author of the Pirate Cookbook we reviewed, and I have the same complaints with this one that I had with that book. Again, there are only seven recipes. I would never pay for a cookbook with only seven recipes. I also thought some of the recipes were less than creative - I don't need a cookbook to tell me to use a star shaped cookie cutter to make a sandwich and consider it a "shooting star". There are some good things about the book: the pictures are great, the directions are easy to follow, and the recipes have fun names that appeal to children.
The recipe C chose from this cookbook is called "Saturn's Rings" and it is made by freezing different types of beverages in ice cube trays, crushing the ice, and layering it to look like rings. The recipe in the book actually calls for sports drinks, but we used 100% fruit juice. The final result will be much more colorful if you use a sports drink or other type of drink made with food coloring.
C and R both enjoyed this fruity crushed ice, even though it wasn't as bright as the recipe pictured in the book.
If you have a child that likes astronomy, then borrow this book from the library, but you can probably find better space themed recipes on the internet.

Yes, the book with 7 recipes sounds like a rip-off! Library is so very handy :) Saturn Rings do look yummy.
Such a fun idea to go through some cookbooks!
Little Wonders' Days
My favorite is probably out of print, it's the one I learned to cook with, it was of recipes around the world.
Crushed ice does sound good........
We need a lot more than seven recipes!
Looks like a great treat!
7 recipes is downright stingy.
What a fun little snack :-) Very healthy!
Have checked out the Pink Princess and Mermaid Cookbooks before but will need to add the Astronaut one to the list (further down the road). All of the snack look fun and yummy!

We are doing a space unit right now and this book would come in handy, but seven recipes?? Yes, a rip off for sure and disappointing.
I think the recipe for Saturn's rings turned out great--it looks really neat.
