How to Make a Cherry Pie and See the USA

We recently read How to Make a Cherry Pie and see the U.S.A. by Marjorie Priceman.  The book follows a baker across the United States in search of coal, cotton, clay, wood, granite, sand, and oil; the materials are needed to create the necessary baking tools to make a pie.  I like the way this book provides an opportunity to discuss the process involved in making everyday things we don't think much about.  What if we couldn't just buy something in the store?  How would we make it and where would we find the materials?  I also love any opportunity to explore geography and this fit in nicely with our Fifty States Project.

I printed a map of the United States that I found at the Coloring Castle site and printed clip art pictures of coal, clay, granite, oil, and sand.  We used a cotton ball to represent cotton and a toothpick to represent wood.  As we read the book, C and R took turns placing the items in the proper states.

How can you read this book and not make cherry pie?  You can't.  So, we made mini cherry pies using Pillsbury pie crust and cherry pie filling.

Looks like a really cool book! I"m guessing its a little "old" for my daughter though? Maybe in a year or so!

We also read an apple pie one last year, and it was quite popular. I liked your approach to extending the book. Now I have to look for it :)

How fun! Where do you find these books? I'm sure at the library, but how do you search?
