Day 3 of Fizzy Fun - the Volcano

We have made the baking soda/vinegar volcano several times before, but it is always a big hit with C and R.  The last two times we made volcanoes, we tried to make them look realistic, but this time we just covered a plastic bottle with play dough and used our imagination to pretend it was a volcano.

We added 3 tsp baking soda and a few drops of red food coloring to the play dough covered bottle and poured in 1 cup of vinegar.  The result, of course, was an erupting volcano!

After the traditional red lava fizziness, C and R asked for blue lava and loved that too!

C and R both said this is their favorite fizzy fun activity so far.  We still have a few more things to do, so we'll see if it remains in first place.

What a fun unit for your kiddos! Sunshine painted a large volcano last summer and had a blast erupting it. So much fun. :) Thanks for stopping by today! There is a link on my site for the Nate the Great websie. There are activities on there. (just in case you haven't seen it) Looks like fun- I need to check it out with Peanut. :)

Baking soda and vinegar is always a big hit over here, too. That is one crazy-looking volcano.

Do you have rootbeer floats on your list of fizzy fun? It's the same science lesson as the mentos and coke fountain - but a lot tastier :) Love the blue lava!

I have to do this one too one of these days. I love how both R and C are engaged in the second picture.

What a fun mess! I remember making a volcano for my science experiment back in grade school. I made a realistic volcano with paper mache and then would use the baking soda/vinegar for it to erupt.
