First Grade Field Trip

I was very happy to be able to chaperone the first grade field trip to Pierce Beach this morning.  The first graders went to Pierce Beach in the fall to collect data (water temperature, air temperature, living and nonliving items on the beach, etc.) and then returned today to collect the same data to compare to their fall visit.

It was a nice day to be there, a little windy, but still nice enough.  The only problem was the warning sign regarding bacteria in the water.  Gross.  I had to scoop up a cup full of that water and measure the temperature!!!

Mrs. Machado spread pink and blue sand and aquarium rocks along the shoreline for the students to observe how waves move sand and rocks.  There weren't many waves, so Mrs. Machado stepped in the water and tried to make some waves.  She was brave getting in that water, but she got results for the experiment.

After two hours of experiments and observations, we ate lunch and then the kids spent some time on the playground.

I'm glad I could be there, and glad that the kids had a great time while learning.

Your schools really run late into the summer. The children here are already running free. I do think a follow-up science investigation to what they did in the fall is very neat, though.

Sounds like a great field trip...I miss going with my kids! I really need to find a babysitter here in St Louis!

A beach trip twice a year sounds like an excellent way to observe changes. The kids must have changed a lot too. I had a chance to go on one field trip this year too - to an art museum. Fun to see so many kids in action :)

I love the idea of spreading colored sand to see how the waves move it.
