Cookies!

Over the last two weeks, we have enjoyed a few books about cookies; you can never go wrong with cookies.

Mr. Cookie Baker by Monica Wellington follows all of the steps Mr. Cookie Baker takes to create delicious cookies.  We really like the simple text and colorful illustrations, but we were most excited to find cookie recipes at the end of the book!  There are four recipes:  sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, and oatmeal cookies.  So far, we have made the peanut butter cookies and they were delicious!  The recipe is different from any peanut butter cookie recipe I have ever used - orange juice is one of the ingredients!  This book is great for toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary age children.  R enjoyed the book; C is a little old for it, but you really can't go wrong with cookies, so he listened.

Who Ate All the Cookie Dough? by Karen Beaumont is a fun mystery featuring animals trying to discover who ate all the cookie dough.  Mama Kangaroo can't find her cookie dough and she asks all of her animal friends if they know who ate the cookie dough.  The mystery is solved with a pop up at the end of the book.  The rhyming text reminded us of the game, "Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?".  Again, this book is probably best for young children with R (age 5) being at the top of the age group.

When reading books about cookies, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff is a must read.  This book needs no introduction, but I feel obligated, so it is a silly chain of events beginning with and stemming from a boy giving a mouse a cookie.

Our final cookie book was All in Just One Cookie by Susan E. Goodman.  Grandma is going to bake chocolate chip cookies, and to do that she needs ingredients from 1 hungry Vermont cow, 2 stalks Hawaiian grass, 1 tsp flower seeds from Madagascar, 2 days of hard work from a New Hampshire hen, and more!  Obviously, this book includes a fun geography lesson that tracks some of the places where the ingredients may be found.  It is a fun book, but we skipped over a lot of the text because there was just too much detail about the ingredients for C and R; the book is recommended for grades 2-4 on Amazon and C is just entering grade 2, R is entering K.  They did enjoy the story though (you can read the story alone without reading the geographical information).  We couldn't resist the chocolate chip cookie recipe at the end of the book!

This was a fun and yummy way for us to end our summer fun.  It's time to switch gears and get into school mode now!

You have such fun ideas! We just read "How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World", which is a similar idea to "All in Just One Cookie".

Mr. Cookie Baker is sitting in our "from the Library" pile, right now. But, we've got apple pie baking on our agenda, today. I guess that does mean it's gear switching time. What happened to summer? Are you all ready for the baby?

Orange Juice? I can't even imagine? I've been craving PB cookies for months, but Dave doesn't like them.

I am going to get that Cookie Baker book. I would love to read and make some cookies from it with Jack.

I have to look for that last cookie book - I love books that sneak some geography in. We loved everything we read by Monica Wellington.
