Georgia O'Keeffe - Art Project

This week we enjoyed reading My Name is Georgia, A Portrait by Jeanette Winter.  This is a great book about the life of Georgia O'Keeffe.  I love books for children that manage to keep them interested while teaching them about artists and their creative processes - this book does all of that very well.

C and R also enjoyed a video about O'Keeffe's creative process that is posted on the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum webpage.  We looked at a lot of her art online too.

One work of art by O'Keeffe that we were all interested in is a painting she created after looking at the sky through the holes in an animal bone.  O'Keeffe's approach to art made us think about our recent project creating art after looking at things from different perspectives.

We didn't have any cow skulls or any other bones with holes hanging around the house, so we used some paper plate flowers I had left over from a story hour.  C and R looked through them and walked around the house looking through the circles in the flowers for something that interested them enough to paint what they saw.

R looked outside and decided to paint these flowers.

C chose to paint his birdhouse hanging in a tree.

When they were done, they used the leftover paint to paint the flowers they looked through.

Thank you, Natalie, for mentioning this book in a blog post!

Great way to get them thinking about the artistic process different artists use!

This is one artist I know we want to explore because she was born in our state!

You went way father in your story extension that we ever managed. I love the idea of looking through something and drawing it, and the results are quite nice!

What a great art activity. The book sounds really good too. When Selena gets artistic again we will have to look into this book.
