Loving Library Books

The title of this post may have lead you to believe that this post would be about books we borrow from the library. We love visiting the library and borrowing books, but this post is actually about a few library themed books we have read recently.

Dewey There's a Cat in the Library by Vicki Myron and Bret Witter is the sweetest book about a cat named Dewey Readmore Books that lives in the library. Dewey confides in his toy mouse about his desire to help people in the library, and he manages to do this in a very cute way. C and R both loved this book. The book was inspired by the adult book, Dewey, by the same author.

The Library Doors by Toni Buzzeo is sung to the tune of The Wheels on the Bus. This is a great book to help children learn about the library. The book follows children on a trip to their school library where they listen to stories, conduct research, check out books, and more. We had fun singing this, and C loved that it reminded him of his school library.

Miss Lotta Scales is The Library Dragon, a fire-breathing dragon who guards the books in the school library and does not let the children near them. When a nearsighted child stumbles into the library and begins reading aloud, other children wander in and the dragon librarian realizes that children can love books and not necessarily damage them. She becomes Miss Lotty and the children begin to enjoy the library. This is a great book to teach children the proper way to handle books.

Do you have any favorite books about the library?

We love libraries and books about the library here too. One book that went over really well was Our Library by Eve Bunting. Another favorite was D.W. Library Card from Marc Brown, but I liked the first better - it's really carries a powerful message.
We haven't read any of your three. I am going to add all of them to my reading list, all your recommendations end up there :)

Instantly I thought about The Librarian from the Black Lagoon by Mike Thaler. I haven't read any of the Black Lagoon series to Drew yet but my older son loved them. They are so funny.

Libraries and books are two favorite things, so the combination of the two- perfect. Thanks for these recommendations. We recently picked up " Library Lion" Michelle Knudsen. It tells the sweet tale of a loveable lion who becames a helpful fixture at his local library. My daughter and I both enjoyed it.

How fun. We were supposed to go to the library today, but didn't make it.

Is that Dewey book related at all to the one about a mouse that lives at a library. It has a mouse on the cover and looks so cute!

I was also going to suggest Library Lion, but also The Boy who was Raised by Librarians. And for Halloween: Bats in the Library! And Hot City, in which kids in the city take refuge from the heat in the library.

These look great. We'll have to check them out. The Library by Sarah Stewart is a favorite of ours. It's about a woman who turns her enormous book collection into a lending library.
