Counting Candy

We own, and LOVE, The M&M's Counting Book by Barbara Barbieri McGrath.  Every once in a while, I pull out a bag of our favorite candies and the book, and we get to work sorting, counting, creating shapes, and making sets.

Today, we focused on the sets.  We made sets of twelve:  1 set of 12, 2 sets of 6, 3 sets of 4, 4 sets of 3, and 6 sets of 2.  It is fun to see how many different ways we can make the same number.

After completing all of the sets, we worked on subtraction.  This is always a favorite because as each candy is subtracted from the set, it is eaten.  I might have liked math more as a kid if it involved chocolate!  Yummy math!

We have that book too, but it's been a while since we've pulled it out - I'm adding M&M's to the grocery list, soon :)

Who wants to count cheerios or goldfish when there are M&Ms available?!? Thanks for the book recommendation - I'll have to see if I can find it.
